BARBER SHOP INSURANCE — OHIO
Barber shop insurance in Ohio.
Protect your chairs,
your tools, and your livelihood.
Ohio barber shops face slip-and-fall liability, equipment theft, professional liability from services, and workers compensation obligations — all under one roof. Myers Insurance Group has been insuring Ohio barber shops since 2008.
WHY BARBER SHOP INSURANCE IS DIFFERENT
A standard BOP is a start. But barber shops need more.
Barber shops are personal service businesses that combine a retail environment with professional services — creating liability exposures on both fronts. Slip-and-fall in the waiting area. A cut or chemical reaction from a service. Equipment theft. Employee injury. Each requires a different type of coverage that a basic Business Owner Policy may not fully address.
Many barber shop owners — especially those who rent chairs to independent barbers — also have coverage gaps they're not aware of. The shop owner's policy may not cover the work of independent chair renters, leaving both parties exposed.
Myers Insurance Group builds Ohio barber shop policies that address the full exposure — from the waiting room to the barber chair to the parking lot.
Coverage gaps in most barber shop policies
No professional liability. A cut, nick, skin irritation, or allergic reaction from a service is a professional liability claim — not covered by General Liability. Most barber shop BOP policies don't include it.
Chair renter coverage gaps. If you rent chairs to independent barbers, your policy likely doesn't cover their work. Each chair renter should carry their own professional liability — and you should verify they do.
Underinsured equipment. Barber chairs, clippers, trimmers, mirrors, and shop build-out represent significant value. Many shops are underinsured on business property.
No workers comp for employed barbers. If you have employed barbers — not chair renters — Workers Compensation is required in Ohio and must cover them.
WHAT WE COVER
Barber shop coverage in Ohio.
A complete Ohio barber shop insurance program covers your premises, your services, your equipment, and your team.
General Liability
Covers slip-and-fall, property damage, and customer injury on your premises. High foot traffic and wet floors make premises liability a real and constant exposure for any barber shop.
Professional Liability
Covers claims from services — cuts, nicks, skin reactions, and allegations of negligent technique. Your most important coverage beyond GL — and the one most commonly missing from barber shop policies.
Business Property
Covers your barber chairs, clippers, trimmers, mirrors, signage, POS system, and shop build-out against fire, theft, vandalism, and covered perils.
Business Owner Policy (BOP)
Bundles GL and property into one cost-effective policy. A solid BOP is the foundation of any barber shop insurance program — with professional liability added on top.
Workers Compensation
Required in Ohio for employed barbers. Covers cuts, repetitive stress injuries, and slip-and-fall behind the chair. Chair renters are not employees — but any W-2 barber must be covered.
Chair Renter Coverage
Each independent barber renting a chair should carry their own GL and professional liability. We help shop owners verify coverage requirements and build lease terms that protect the shop from chair renter liability.
Crime & Theft
Barber equipment — clippers, trimmers, straight razors — is portable and valuable. Crime coverage protects against equipment theft and employee dishonesty.
Business Interruption
Covers lost revenue when a fire or covered loss forces you to close temporarily. A barber shop with no chairs cutting is a barber shop losing money — BI coverage keeps the lights on during repairs.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Barber shop insurance in Ohio — what you need to know.
Does my General Liability cover a client who gets cut during a service?
No. A client injury from an actual barber service — a cut, nick, skin irritation, or allergic reaction — is a professional liability claim, not a GL claim. General Liability covers premises-related injuries like slip-and-fall, not service-related injuries. Professional liability is the coverage that responds to service claims, and it must be specifically added to your policy.
I rent chairs to independent barbers — am I responsible if they injure a client?
Potentially, yes — especially if the client sues the shop rather than the individual barber. The safest approach is to require every chair renter to carry their own General Liability and Professional Liability insurance, and to verify it annually. Your lease agreement should specify these requirements. We help shop owners build coverage programs that protect them from chair renter liability exposure.
Does Ohio require barber shops to carry insurance?
Ohio State Board of Cosmetology licensing requirements include insurance provisions for licensed establishments. Beyond licensing, landlords typically require minimum liability coverage as a condition of your lease, and a single uninsured claim can cost far more than years of premiums.
My clippers and equipment were stolen — is that covered?
If you have business property coverage, yes — your equipment is covered against theft. If you only have General Liability, no — GL covers damage to others, not your own property. Business property coverage is what protects your equipment, and it's a core component of any complete barber shop insurance program.
