Standard commercial insurance misses most of what churches actually need.

Churches and houses of worship are complex organizations that combine real property, community programming, volunteer workforces, youth ministry, financial stewardship, and often food service — all under one roof and one leadership structure. A standard commercial General Liability policy covers almost none of the specific liability exposures this creates.

Directors and officers liability, sexual misconduct liability, volunteer accident coverage, and special events coverage are all critical components of a complete church insurance program — and all are either excluded or severely limited by standard commercial policies.

Myers Insurance Group works with carriers that specialize in religious organizations and builds Ohio church policies that actually protect the full scope of your ministry and your congregation.

What most Ohio churches are missing

No Directors & Officers coverage. Board members and church leadership make financial and governance decisions that can generate claims. D&O protects the individuals who lead your church.

No sexual misconduct liability. Any organization working with youth or vulnerable populations needs this coverage. It's excluded from standard GL and is one of the most significant exposures for any church.

No volunteer coverage. Standard Workers Compensation doesn't cover volunteers. If a volunteer is injured during a church activity, your GL policy may not respond either.

Underinsured property. Churches often hold significant real property and contents — pews, musical instruments, AV equipment, kitchens — that are dramatically undervalued on standard policies.

Church and house of worship coverage in Ohio.

A complete Ohio church insurance program covers your building, your congregation, your leadership, and your ministry activities.

General Liability

Covers slip-and-fall, property damage, and third-party injury on church property. The foundation of any church policy — covering Sunday services, events, and daily operations.

Church Property

Covers your building, sanctuary, fellowship hall, pews, musical instruments, AV equipment, kitchen, and contents. Church property is often significantly undervalued — proper replacement cost coverage is critical.

Directors & Officers (D&O)

Covers board members and church leadership against claims arising from governance and management decisions — financial mismanagement allegations, employment disputes, and organizational decisions.

Sexual Misconduct Liability

Essential for any organization working with youth or vulnerable populations. Covers claims of sexual misconduct by staff or volunteers — excluded from standard GL. Non-negotiable for any Ohio church with youth ministry.

Volunteer Accident Coverage

Standard Workers Comp doesn't cover volunteers. Volunteer accident coverage protects congregation members and community volunteers who are injured during church activities and ministry work.

Special Events Coverage

Covers weddings, funerals, community events, fundraisers, and off-site gatherings. Many church events take place away from the main property — special events coverage ensures protection wherever ministry happens.

Church Vehicle Coverage

Covers church-owned vans and buses used for transportation ministry, youth trips, and community outreach. Also addresses non-owned auto liability for volunteers driving personal vehicles for church purposes.

Workers Compensation

Required in Ohio for paid employees — pastors, administrative staff, custodians, and childcare workers. Separate from volunteer coverage, which requires its own dedicated policy.

Crime & Embezzlement

Churches handle significant cash from offerings and fundraising. Crime coverage protects against employee dishonesty, embezzlement, and theft of church funds — one of the most common church losses.

Church insurance in Ohio — what you need to know.

Does our General Liability policy cover our youth program activities?

Standard GL covers premises liability — slip-and-fall and basic property damage. It typically does not cover sexual misconduct claims, volunteer injuries, or off-site youth program activities. A complete church insurance program adds specific coverage for youth ministry, volunteer activities, and off-premises events to fill these critical gaps.

Are our board members personally protected if someone sues the church over a financial decision?

Not without Directors & Officers coverage. D&O protects individual board members and church leaders from personal liability arising from governance decisions — financial mismanagement allegations, employment disputes, and organizational decisions that affect members or employees. Without D&O, a lawsuit against the church can become a personal liability for the individuals who lead it.

A volunteer was injured setting up for a church event. Are we covered?

Volunteer injuries fall in a coverage gap that catches many churches off guard. Workers Compensation covers employees — not volunteers. General Liability covers injury to third parties — not typically your own volunteers. Volunteer accident coverage is a specific policy designed to fill this gap and cover medical expenses for volunteers injured during church activities.

We host a community wedding in our facility — are we covered if something goes wrong?

Your standard GL may provide some coverage for events held on your property, but weddings and community events often involve outside vendors, caterers, and large crowds that create additional liability. Special events coverage ensures your church is properly protected for any event hosted on your property — and can extend to off-site events your church sponsors or organizes.
