WHAT WE COVER
Contractor insurance coverage in Ohio.
Ohio contractors need more than a basic GL policy. Here's what a complete contractor insurance program looks like.
General Liability
Covers property damage, third-party injury, and completed operations claims. The foundation of every contractor policy — and completed operations coverage is critical for claims that arise after a job is finished.
Workers Compensation
Required in Ohio for employees. Construction and trade work is physically dangerous — falls, equipment injuries, and repetitive stress claims are common. Non-negotiable for any crew.
Professional Liability / E&O
Covers claims from faulty workmanship or design errors. A leaking roof six months after you finished, a water damage claim from a plumbing mistake — completed operations and professional liability protect you long after the job is done.
Commercial Auto
Covers trucks, vans, and vehicles used on the job. Personal auto policies exclude business use — one accident on the way to a job site without commercial auto is a serious problem.
Tools & Equipment Coverage
Covers your tools, equipment, and materials on and off job sites. Tool theft from job sites and vehicles is one of the most common contractor losses in Ohio.
Inland Marine / Builder's Risk
Covers materials and equipment in transit and at job sites. Builder's risk covers structures under construction against fire, theft, and weather damage.
Commercial Umbrella
Construction liability claims can be massive — especially for property damage or serious injury on a job site. Umbrella adds critical excess protection above your primary limits.
Surety Bonds
Many Ohio contractors are required to be bonded. Surety bonds protect your clients if you fail to complete a job or meet contractual obligations — and many contracts require them.
Subcontractor Coverage
General contractors carry liability for every subcontractor on their jobs. We help you structure coverage that protects you from uninsured sub exposure.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Contractor insurance in Ohio — what you need to know.
I'm a solo contractor — do I still need insurance?
Yes. As a sole operator you have no corporate shield — any claim goes directly against you personally. One property damage claim or injury on a job site without GL coverage can wipe out everything you've built. Most homeowners and commercial clients also require proof of insurance before you set foot on their property.
What is completed operations coverage and why do I need it?
Completed operations is part of your General Liability that covers claims arising after a job is finished. A roof you installed that leaks six months later. A pipe you repaired that fails and floods a basement. An electrical panel you replaced that causes a fire. These claims happen long after you've been paid and moved on — and completed operations coverage is what protects you.
Do I need to be bonded in Ohio?
Ohio doesn't require a statewide contractor bond for all trades, but many municipalities have local bonding requirements. Additionally, most commercial contracts and many homeowners require contractors to carry a surety bond as a condition of the work. We help you understand your bonding obligations and get the right bond in place.
My tools were stolen from my truck — is that covered?
Not by your GL policy or standard commercial auto policy. Tool theft requires dedicated inland marine or tools and equipment coverage. This is one of the most common contractor losses in Ohio — and one of the most commonly uncovered. If your tools were stolen and you don't have inland marine coverage, the full replacement cost comes out of your pocket.
