DOG GROOMER INSURANCE — OHIO

Dog groomer insurance in Ohio.
Protect the pets in your care
and the business you built.

Pet groomers take legal responsibility for every animal in their care. Animal bailee coverage, professional liability, and general liability are the foundation of any grooming business policy. Myers Insurance Group has been insuring Ohio pet businesses since 2008.

Every animal in your care is a liability.

Dog groomers and pet care businesses take legal custody of clients' animals — and for many clients, those animals are family. When something goes wrong during a grooming session — an animal is injured, escapes, or becomes ill — the emotional and financial stakes can be significant.

Animal bailee coverage is the specialty coverage that protects you when animals in your care are injured, become ill, or die. Standard General Liability policies cover human injury and property damage — they don't cover animals. Without animal bailee coverage, you're personally liable for the full veterinary cost and replacement value of any animal harmed in your care.

Myers Insurance Group builds Ohio pet grooming policies that cover your services, the animals in your care, your facility, and your employees — completely.

The coverage gaps most Ohio groomers don't know they have

No animal bailee coverage. Standard GL policies don't cover animals. If a dog in your care is injured during grooming, escapes and is hit by a car, or dies from a reaction to a grooming product, animal bailee coverage is what responds — not your GL policy.

No professional liability. A grooming cut that gets infected, a dog that develops a skin reaction from your products, or a haircut that a client claims damaged their show dog's coat — these are professional liability claims, not GL claims.

Animal bites to employees. Dog bites and scratches are occupational hazards for groomers. Workers Compensation covers your employees when they're bitten or injured during grooming — and it's required in Ohio for any grooming business with employees.

Mobile grooming gaps. Mobile groomers using a grooming van need commercial auto coverage for the vehicle AND property coverage for the equipment inside it. Personal auto policies exclude commercial grooming van operations.

A complete Ohio pet grooming insurance program covers the animals in your care, your professional services, your facility, and your team.

Animal Bailee Coverage

Covers animals in your care against injury, illness, escape, and death. Your most important and most commonly missing coverage — standard GL policies don't cover animals at all.

General Liability

Covers customer injury, property damage, and third-party claims at your grooming facility. A client slips in your lobby, a dog damages another client's property — GL covers these claims.

Professional Liability

Covers claims from your grooming services — a grooming cut that gets infected, a product reaction, or a client who claims your work injured their animal. Separate from GL and animal bailee coverage.

Workers Compensation

Required in Ohio for employees. Dog bites, scratches, and animal handling injuries are the top occupational risks for groomers. Non-negotiable for any grooming business with employed staff.

Business Property

Covers your grooming equipment, tubs, tables, dryers, clippers, and salon build-out against fire, theft, and covered perils.

Commercial Auto (Mobile Groomers)

Required for mobile grooming vans. Personal auto policies exclude commercial grooming van operations — and the equipment inside the van needs separate property coverage.

Business Owner Policy (BOP)

Bundles GL and property for cost-effective base coverage. A BOP is the right starting point for most grooming salons — with animal bailee and professional liability added as essential additions.

Business Interruption

Covers lost revenue when a fire or covered loss forces you to close temporarily. A grooming salon with no appointments running has no income — BI coverage keeps you financially stable during repairs.

Dog groomer insurance in Ohio — what you need to know.

A dog died in my care during grooming — am I covered?

Only with animal bailee coverage. The death of an animal during grooming — from a grooming-related injury, a reaction to products, or a pre-existing condition that manifested during the stress of grooming — is covered under animal bailee insurance. Standard GL policies specifically exclude animals from coverage. Animal bailee coverage pays for the veterinary costs, the animal's fair market value, and your legal defense if the client sues. Without it, you're personally liable for the full cost of the loss.

One of my groomers was bitten by a client's dog — are we covered?

Yes — with Workers Compensation. Dog bites are the most common occupational injury in pet grooming. Workers Comp covers your employee's medical expenses, lost wages during recovery, and any rehabilitation costs. In Ohio, Workers Compensation is required for most employers with employees — and for a grooming business, it's not just a legal requirement, it's essential protection for the people who work for you.

I groom dogs out of my home — does my homeowner's policy cover me?

No. Homeowner's policies explicitly exclude business operations conducted from your home — and they never cover animals in your care as part of a business operation. If you groom dogs at your home for payment, you need a separate grooming business policy that covers your professional liability, animal bailee exposure, and any client injuries that occur on your property. Operating without it leaves both your grooming business and your homeowner's coverage at risk.

A dog escaped my salon and was hit by a car — am I liable?

Yes. When a client's animal is in your care, you have a legal duty to prevent its escape. An animal that escapes and is injured or killed creates a claim against your business — and if the escaped animal causes a traffic accident, the liability exposure expands significantly. Animal bailee coverage addresses the injury or death of the animal. General Liability addresses any third-party property damage or injury caused by the escaped animal. Both coverages are essential for any grooming operation.
