FOOD TRUCK INSURANCE — OHIO
Food truck insurance in Ohio.
Mobile business coverage
that moves with you.
Food trucks are mobile businesses with a unique insurance profile — you need commercial auto coverage for the truck, general liability for where you park, and product liability for what you serve. Most personal auto and standard business policies don't cover any of it. Myers Insurance Group has been insuring Ohio food trucks since 2008.
WHY FOOD TRUCK INSURANCE IS DIFFERENT
A food truck is a restaurant on wheels. It needs coverage for both.
Food trucks combine two distinct business operations — a vehicle and a food service business — into one unit. That means your insurance needs to address both dimensions simultaneously. Your personal auto policy won't cover commercial food truck use. A standard restaurant BOP doesn't address the vehicle. You need a policy built specifically for mobile food operations.
Ohio food trucks also operate in multiple locations, at events, on public streets, and in parking lots — each with different liability exposures. Many event organizers and property owners now require food vendors to carry specific coverage limits as a condition of participation.
Myers Insurance Group builds food truck policies that cover the truck, the kitchen inside it, the food you serve, and the customers you serve it to — wherever you park.
The gaps that catch Ohio food truck owners off guard
Personal auto doesn't cover commercial food truck use. The moment your truck is used for business, your personal auto policy excludes it. One accident without commercial auto is catastrophic.
Standard commercial auto doesn't cover the kitchen equipment inside. Commercial auto covers the vehicle — not the fryers, grills, generators, and equipment built into it. You need separate property coverage for your kitchen build-out.
GL doesn't cover food contamination. A food-borne illness claim from a customer is a product liability matter — not covered by standard GL. Product liability is a separate and essential coverage for any food operation.
Event organizers require specific coverage. Most festivals, markets, and venues require vendors to carry minimum GL limits and name the event as an additional insured. Make sure your policy can accommodate this.
WHAT WE COVER
Food truck coverage in Ohio.
A complete Ohio food truck insurance program covers the vehicle, the kitchen, the food, and the customers — wherever you operate.
Commercial Auto
Covers your food truck as a commercial vehicle — liability, collision, and comprehensive. Personal auto insurance never covers commercial food truck use. This is your most fundamental coverage.
General Liability
Covers customer injury, property damage, and third-party claims at your service location. Required by most events, festivals, and venues as a condition of participation.
Product Liability
Covers food-borne illness, allergen exposure, and contamination claims from customers. One food poisoning incident without product liability can generate multiple simultaneous claims.
Equipment & Kitchen Coverage
Covers the kitchen equipment built into your truck — fryers, grills, generators, refrigeration, and POS systems. Commercial auto covers the vehicle, not the kitchen inside it.
Equipment Breakdown
Covers repair costs and lost income when your generator, refrigeration, or cooking equipment fails. A broken fryer at a busy event is a covered loss with the right policy.
Workers Compensation
Required in Ohio if you have employees helping you operate. Kitchen injuries in the confined space of a food truck are common — burns, cuts, and slips are your top exposures.
Business Interruption
Covers lost revenue when a covered loss — vehicle accident, equipment failure, or fire — takes your truck off the road temporarily.
Additional Insured Endorsements
Most events and venues require you to name them as additional insured on your GL policy. We make sure your policy can accommodate these requirements so you never lose a booking over insurance.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Food truck insurance in Ohio — what you need to know.
Can I use my personal auto insurance for my food truck?
No. Personal auto insurance excludes vehicles used for commercial purposes. The moment your food truck is operating as a business vehicle, your personal policy does not apply. One accident without commercial auto coverage — whether you're driving to a location, parked and serving, or involved in any incident during business operations — will result in a denied claim and full personal liability.
An event requires me to carry $1 million in liability and name them as additional insured. Can you do that?
Yes. This is a standard request from event organizers, festivals, and venue operators. We build food truck policies with the liability limits needed for event participation and the ability to add additional insureds as needed. We can provide certificates of insurance quickly so you never miss a booking over a paperwork issue.
What happens if my generator fails at a weekend festival and I lose all my inventory?
Equipment breakdown coverage would cover the cost of repairing or replacing your generator, and spoilage coverage would cover the lost food inventory. Standard commercial property policies exclude mechanical breakdown — you need specific equipment breakdown coverage. Without it, the full cost of the generator repair and spoiled inventory comes out of your pocket.
I operate my food truck seasonally — do I need year-round coverage?
Your commercial auto coverage needs to stay active year-round as long as you own the vehicle — even when it's not operating. Your GL and product liability can be structured around your operating season. We help seasonal food truck operators build cost-effective coverage that matches their actual operating calendar without leaving gaps during the off-season.
