TATTOO SHOP INSURANCE — OHIO
Tattoo shop insurance in Ohio.
Coverage for the art and
the exposure that comes with it.
Tattoo and body art studios carry unique professional liability exposure that most standard business policies simply don't cover. Infections, allergic reactions, bloodborne pathogen exposure — the right policy is built for your specific risk. Myers Insurance Group has been insuring Ohio body art studios since 2008.
WHY TATTOO SHOP INSURANCE IS DIFFERENT
Standard business insurance wasn't built for body art studios.
Tattoo shops and body piercing studios operate in a unique liability environment. Every service involves skin penetration, blood exposure, and the application of permanent or semi-permanent body modification. Standard commercial General Liability policies often exclude or severely limit coverage for these specific activities.
The result is that many Ohio tattoo artists are operating with policies that look comprehensive on paper but would deny the exact types of claims they're most likely to face — infections, allergic reactions to inks, bloodborne pathogen transmission, and dissatisfied client claims.
Myers Insurance Group works with carriers that understand the body art industry and write policies that actually cover what tattoo shops need covered.
The gaps in most tattoo shop policies
Standard GL excludes professional services. Your general liability policy covers slip-and-fall and property damage — not claims arising from the actual tattoo or piercing services you provide. Professional liability is a separate coverage.
Bloodborne pathogen exposure isn't covered by GL. Needle-stick injuries to employees and potential pathogen transmission to clients require specific coverage that standard policies exclude.
Ink and equipment aren't covered by GL. Your tattoo machines, inks, and supplies need dedicated property coverage — GL only covers damage to others, not your own equipment.
Artists as independent contractors creates gaps. If you rent chairs to independent artists and they're not properly covered, you could be held liable for their work.
WHAT WE COVER
Tattoo shop and body art studio coverage in Ohio.
A complete Ohio tattoo shop insurance program covers your professional services, your studio, your equipment, and your team.
General Liability
Covers slip-and-fall, property damage, and non-professional third-party injury claims in your studio. The foundation of any business policy — but not sufficient on its own for tattoo operations.
Professional Liability
Covers claims arising from your actual tattoo and piercing services — infections, allergic reactions, unsatisfactory results, and claims of negligent technique. This is your most critical coverage.
Bloodborne Pathogen Liability
Specialty coverage for exposure-related claims — potential transmission of bloodborne pathogens to clients or needle-stick injuries to artists. Essential for any tattoo or piercing operation.
Business Property
Covers your tattoo machines, power supplies, inks, autoclave equipment, furniture, and studio build-out against theft, fire, and covered perils.
Workers Compensation
Required in Ohio for employees. Covers needle-stick injuries, chemical exposure from inks and cleaning agents, and other occupational injuries to your employed artists and staff.
Business Owner Policy (BOP)
Bundles GL and property for cost-effective base coverage. A BOP is a good starting point for tattoo studios — with professional liability and bloodborne pathogen coverage added on top.
Crime & Theft
Tattoo equipment is expensive and portable — a prime theft target. Covers equipment theft from your studio and, with inland marine coverage, from your vehicle.
Independent Artist Coverage
If you rent chairs to independent artists, we help you structure coverage that protects your studio from liability arising from their work — and ensures they're carrying adequate coverage of their own.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Tattoo shop insurance in Ohio — what you need to know.
Does my General Liability policy cover a client's allergic reaction to tattoo ink?
Almost certainly not. An allergic reaction to tattoo ink is a claim arising from your professional services — and standard GL policies specifically exclude professional services liability. You need professional liability coverage (also called errors and omissions) to be covered for this type of claim. This is one of the most common and most costly gaps we find in Ohio tattoo shop policies.
I rent a chair in someone else's studio — do I need my own insurance?
Yes. The studio owner's policy covers the studio — not you or your work. As an independent artist, you carry your own professional liability exposure for every tattoo you do. Your own professional liability policy protects you against claims from your clients regardless of whose studio you're working in.
Does Ohio require tattoo shops to carry insurance?
Ohio health department licensing requirements for tattoo studios typically include proof of insurance as part of the licensing process. Beyond the licensing requirement, operating without adequate professional liability and GL coverage exposes both your business assets and personal assets to any claim that arises from your work.
A client is unhappy with their tattoo and threatening to sue — am I covered?
A dissatisfied client claim is a professional liability matter. Whether the claim has merit or not, your professional liability policy covers your legal defense costs and any settlement or judgment — up to your policy limits. Without professional liability, you're paying for your own defense out of pocket, which can be costly even when you've done nothing wrong.
